Social Music Networks

One of the early networking sites that provided a solid audio-feature was Myspace, which become popular around 2006. Even though Myspace enabled artists to upload their music, there never was much of a “social feel” to it, as the now well established “like” and comment buttons were missing.

A lot different are these platforms: Turntable.fm allows you to be a DJ and invite friends from other social networks like Facebook to join your private online party. The guests have  the ability to listen to your mixes and vote if they like it or not. Unfortunately, turntable.fm is still going through trial right now and is only available to users in the US so that I wasn’t able to test its features. I came across a similar project though, a online mixing station which goes by the name of Outloud.fm and enables its users to create “rooms” in which they can upload or link their favourite music, listen to it and discuss it with people within that room. Access is easy: Simply visit the website and log in with your Twitter or Facebook account and your ready to go! While certainly having fun uploading my first songs and chatting with some of the users on the site, I realised though, that this startup is relatively unknown to the public and only a few users are yet to be found on the platform. I really hope that this changes quickly though and if anyone is keen for a online DJ session simply contact me on Twitter @Schlauri.

It will be interesting to see how the two projects develop but I believe that such multimedia mixing stations will become more and more popular in the future and I am already excited to have a go at the first mobile apps. Rather than listening to my own music on the bus, I will then be able to share the newest tracks and albums with my friends and comment, remix and link them. And if you are an up and coming musician, why not use those platforms to spread your own music and receive feedback from the online crowd?

ATCQ Documentary

The A Tribe Called Quest Documentary hits the movies this weekend….that is in the states. Actor Rapaport directed the controversial movie which documents the rise and fall of the group and the strained relationship between members Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Personally, I can’t wait to see it…. Putting those Midnight Marauder and Beats, Rhymes and Life album back on my playlist! “You on point Phife?  All the time, tip.”
